The outer beaches (Chatham to Provincetown) of Cape Cod are home to large populations of seals. These Gray seals have to haul themselves out of the water regularly to rest. The males weigh about 850lbs and have elongated heads, known as horse heads. The females are smaller, with a pronouced spotted pattern, and have a more traditional seal look. These seals can hold their breath for up to 40 minutes and will sometimes allow themselves to sink to the bottom, where they'll actually nap for a while. While napping they occasionally float to the surface, grab a breath and sink back to the bottom. The seals are also a favorite of Great Whites!
